Truth be told there is not one particular thing that makes me a Washingtonian. I believe that D.C. in itself embodies characteristics that I innately possess as a person. Let me first introduce myself; my name is Mary Carew and although I was born in Silver-Spring Maryland and lived 9 years of my childhood in West Africa. The one place I do consider home is Washington, D.C;  I have lived in the area for over two decades and counting! As someone who was raised here at a young age, I  truly believe that D.C. has had a subtle effect in molding who I am as a person. If you have lived here for a while, you will recognize that D.C. is a city full of perfectionists, like myself. I know that living in this city has enhanced various character traits of mine for example I am someone who is very diligent, strong-willed, determined and  is often striving for personal growth and accomplishment.

This city is truly one of a kind and that is the reason why I am still here. After moving from Africa, which is a very communal region D.C. was the perfect transition for my immigrant family and myself, for it offered the same sense of diversity, community, pride and unity that I witnessed as a child in West Africa. Honestly, I could not see myself anywhere else but the hustling and bustling streets of D.C.

Living in DC is a great experience for most of the 700,000 plus people that live here. This city has its ups and downs but I still love it. Growing up here has and is forming me to be the person I want to be. DC is not just a place it’s an identity and a lifestyle.

I consider DC home because I was raised here. Most of my family and friends live in my area and we do many fun things. They also make the area feel safe because knowing you have people around that will do anything for you is important. Another important thing is culture, and DC has a lot of it. We have cultural events, music, buildings, and places that make DC a home to many.

I embody DC by enjoying what it has to offer. For example, I like going to local landmarks like museums and parks. I also really enjoy cook outs with my family. The experience of this city becomes part of you and it’s a beautiful thing to see DC keep striving. I’ve been living here all my life and I can say it is great.

Shoes

I feel like shoes are one of the biggest things in DC because shoes are like our culture. And when I say that I mean the way shoes impact dc is different . In other locations shoes are just shoes but in dc shoes really have a meaning . its kinda like DC popularized some shoes such as the grey and white New Balance 990V. This shoe is a big part of dc. In most parts of dc you will normally see somebody wearing a pair of these shoes because in dc this is just a really popular shoe.  And it’s like it’s a part of our “culture” . Many shoes are big in dc but i feel like those are just the biggest shoes in dc. So coming to dc shoes is just a big thing here.

What makes me DC is the fact that both my parents have been living here for 20+ years and my dad has been here his whole life. I am a second generation Washingtonian. My dad went to Howard so I know all about the culture of DC and what it has to offer. My dad would bring me to Howard homecoming and I loved all of the culture. I think DC with its history is fascinating and it’s very important. Overall I’m in DC because my family has been here for years and I love the culture of DC. In DC I love going to my local park to play basketball with my friends. One thing that is very important to me and my DC culture is taking the metro and metro bus. Public transportation in DC goes back a long time and it is easy and can take you all over the city. DC is a great place to have fun with your family and that’s what I like to do. My family and I like to grill with my family and have big get-togethers, that’s why I love DC because it’s a place that reminds me of home. Therefore, my brand correlates to the fact that I am a family, friend and community oriented person, all the things that make DC so unique. I am a student athlete, I hold myself to high standards when it comes to school, I have never missed an honor roll from middle school to now. I want to go to college and be successful and make my family proud.

These are some of the pictures of me as a child at Howard with my family because my dad always wanted me involved in the culture.

What makes me DC is my parents origin. One side of my fathers family grew up here and my mother moved here to attend college. They met while attending Howard University. As for me, I’ve been here all my life. While here I’ve played lots of sports including, football, basketball, and baseball, before settling on track and soccer. I’ve been running track for about a year and I’ve been playing soccer since I was 3. These sports have enabled me to meet all sorts of people all throughout DC and travel throughout the DMV area. Though I love soccer, track makes me feel more connected to the city as there is a larger black presence in track than there is in soccer, despite this fact some of my oldest friends come from soccer and it too has given me the opportunity to meet people from multiple different cultures. This is important because DC is often called a melting pot of different cultures and peoples. It is for all of these reasons that I am DC.

What makes me DC?

There’s nothing that makes me DC besides being exposed and introduced to the culture and people. Social media, Media Platforms, Concerts, Restaurants, and other community groups, services, and events have changed my mind about how I see the world, how I adapt with other people, and how I perform myself- work, school, hobbies, etc.)

Place of Birth?

I wasn’t born here but I recreated myself here, rebuilt myself, and began my career. So it was a rebirth of my own path.

Religion?

My religion was Christianity and some other religious habits but I don’t believe that changes when in D.C.

Language?

The language I believe I learned in D.C. is Spanish. Although, I need more practice now.

Cuisine?

Mumbo sauce and chicken wings.

Social Behavior:

Slang , Art Work, how to build relationships, Museums, and GoGo music

This is a picture of me in Georgetown for my DC History Class in high school when I learned more about DC and its history.

What is my Brand?

Cultivating a social presence that demonstrates a brand takes knowledge of oneself and the community. I can genuinely say that my brand embodies what it means to be from the chocolate city! Black, chill, vibrant, comforting, unique, and at times a mixture of both sweet and sour.

A city of visionaries yearning for the endless possibilities and opportunities to come!

Dc is the people. I am the people!

What it means to be a Black Woman from DC:

Being a Black Woman from, Dc means being very Outgoing, Beautiful, Stylish, and Very Strong!

Being a black woman from dc means being an advocate for each other!

I Am a Black Woman from DC!

I was exposed to a maelstrom of the things that have gathered in this city while growing up in Washington, D.C. From entering the elementary school lottery and waiting days to find out if I got in, all the way through high school until I finally applied to a private school and was fed up with the d.c. lottery.

I also was a part of a girl scout troop and sold cookies all around dc and even had a song for customers when they came up to my cousin and I’s stand. It went like this……

G’s for Girl S for scouts this is how u get them now

Walk up to the table pick your choice, pick your choice(2x)

We got Do-si-dos (2x)

Dulce de Leche (2x)

Trefoils(2x)

Tagalongs (2x)

Savannah Smiles (2x)

Samoas (2x)

And thin mints, thin mints (2x)

One last memory that makes me dc is when my high school cheerleaders and I cheered in RFK Stadium. This was a terrific experience to have because the stadium is currently empty and not in use. It was a wonderful chance to learn about and take part in the RFK Stadium’s history.

Who is Jevon Walton? https://humannaturemag.techplay.org/blog/2022/07/14/jevon-walton/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=jevon-walton https://humannaturemag.techplay.org/blog/2022/07/14/jevon-walton/#respond Thu, 14 Jul 2022 15:43:30 +0000 http://humannaturemag.techplay.org/?p=3458

My name is Jevon Walton. I am 19 years old and from the Nation’s Capital Washington DC.  DC may not be a state but it feels like one with the structure of the buildings and the culture that is in DC. DC was known as chocolate city due to the 70% African American population during the 1970’s. Currently my brothers and sisters are being forced out due to gentrification which is sad to see. On a positive note, I, similar to my brothers and sisters, represent the important trait of Washingtonians which is hustling. My brand comes from hard work and dedication. I had to work to get in the position I needed to be in to succeed. I had to work hard to be in college. Working hard to be put in to earn what I wanted. It takes time and effort to gain the things that we need to gain.

Currently I attend SUNY Oswego, in upstate New York and get asked all the time what DC is like. The way I can describe DC is as a mini New York City with each part being like a borough in New York. For example, NW would be like Manhattan because it is really busy just like Manhattan. NE would be like Brooklyn, SE is similar to the Bronx, and SW is similar to a combination of Queens and Staten Island. DC recently has become like New York with all of the infrastructure that has been built within it. DC is also connected to Maryland and Virginia which we have access to, which is why we call it the DMV.

Jevon's Dorm Room
In Northwest there a store that plays GoGo music. It is located on Florida Avenue and 7th Street near Shaw station. Jevon said that he will remember music playing everyday when he went to Shaw station.

What makes me DC is the culture that has grown around me. Everyday there are some new interesting things to see. I love seeing beautiful parks such as Garrison Park near Shaw-Howard with the population of people. There are also the museums and the recently built African American museum which is a good place to go to because a majority are free and teach history to me. DC has its own brand of music called Gogo which I grew up listening to everyday and that has been engraved in my mind from my family and community. You can not walk around DC without hearing at least some piece of gogo music.

Another part that makes me DC is mumbo sauce. DC has its own sauce that makes food taste amazing. It is called Mumbo sauce and it is a combination of sauces that I can place on almost anything from rice to chicken. Anyone in the DMV will tell you that when you go to the carryout, you have to get mumbo sauce because it makes everything taste good.

In DC there is a popular sauce that everyone gets from the carryout. It is called Mumbo Sauce and it is a blend of sauces in one. Jevon loves to put this native sauce on all the food he gets from the carryout.

What makes me DC as well is community because in DC literally everyone knows someone who knows another person. In DC you or someone you know will be connected to another person from the city. School really connected to some bright like minded individuals like myself.  I attended the number one school in DC, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, where black excellence was promoted. My class had everyone going to college which is not common for my community but it is something I’m proud of.

Jevon took this photo on the day of his in person graduation during the Covid-19 Pandemic. He is a Banneker Alumni and thanks every struggling moment because it helped with college.
